A young man from our ward is serving in Afghanistan in the Marines. When he left, we were given a military branch in California (Camp Pendleton) as his new unit and sent the record.
His father was contacted by CHQ this week asking as to his current whereabouts (they didn't know he was in Afghanistan, apparently). Not sure what happened here...
What should do from here? Request the record back into our ward? Is there a unit to send him to?

Unit for a member serving in Afghanistan?
Former membership clerk under 3 bishops, now on 2nd stint as executive secretary. Can I go back to teaching priesthood now?

Presumably, now that the church knows the situation it will be forwarded to the correct unit.

I'm only hearing this third hand, but the father didn't seem to think that it was resolved. I guess the best approach is to send a Message through MLS with the member's membership number and inquire as to which unit the member is assigned? Or does the father have to call somewhere?
This is a bit of a generic question -- how do we handle the records of members who are off to war? While he was at boot camp, there was a defined unit to assign them to (in the Carlsbad Stake) but what after?

Thanks for the links to the other posts. I've managed to get contact information for the military districts and we're checking it out. The mom thinks that there might be instructions in a letter her son received from the QoS, and she's checking that out as well.
