Re-labeling Tithing Envelopes

In our stake, and in other stakes in which I have lived, it was a policy that whenever a Bishop (or Branch President) was called that you always ordered new tithing envelopes. For a short while it was okay to use the old tithing envelopes with a label pasted over the old Bishop/Branch President name and address until the new envelopes arrived and then dispose of the old envelopes. In other words, it was a policy not to use the old envelopes except for necessity right after the leadership change.

Thus the question...is there a policy written somewhere or is this just a common practice that most/some units have adhered to? I know that in other stakes in which I have lived I have heard this policy but can't find anywhere where it is written. I called the MLS help line and the folks in the finance section said they never heard of such a policy....

Any ideas or is this just a figment of our stakes imagination?

A previous version of the Church Stationery Order Form had some sort of wording on it to the effect of "destroy all old donation envelopes", but I don't see any such wording on the current form. The wording was linked to a space where you could order labels that were specifically for the #10 envelopes only. I guess they didn't want to have to print more labels than necessary. Now you can't even order labels from Printing Services, as I suppose it's just as easy to print your own.

Our recently-released bishop (of only a year and a half) was called into the stake presidency. I've got a case and a half of donation envelopes I don't really wish to throw away. Instead of wasting time and effort relabeling them, I took a few minutes to create a template that printed a black box over the old bishop's name and address and printed the new one to the right of the blacked out name. Works like a charm for us!

There's your answer. If clerk support has never heard of it, then it is local policy/culture.

As an aside, I've never heard of this policy and have helped several of my wards create labels so they can use the former bishop's envelopes.

With the economies of volume that the church achieves printing so many envelopes, I would not be surprised if it was as cheap or cheaper to print new envelopes compared to purchasing, laser printing, and applying labels. A side benefit to printing your own labels is that you avoid getting even more extra receipts--they always send way more receipts than envelopes and we have tons extra.

I've not experienced this. I've always been within 2 or 3 slips of the total number of envelopes. Then again, I take all the envelopes home and stuff them with tithing slips before putting them out. It looks nicer on display and nearly ensures the one-to-one relationship of labels to envelopes.
