LDS Field Day - July 24th 2010

In northern California and western Nevada, we are planning to have a Field Day type event, in conjunction with any stake activities that are planned for Pioneer Day, July 24th, such as picnics or other events. If your stake is not planning such activities, you can still participate. The idea is to conduct an event similar to the traditional Field Day that is normally held at the end of June.

We felt that July 24th would be a good day since it's on a Saturday this year and many stakes will already be planning an outside festivity. The plan is to have stake and ward Emergency Communications specialists set up HF and VHF radios and establish communications with wards within your stake, other stakes and your storehouse. The storehouse in Sacramento will be manned for contacts as well. In addition, we are coordinating with Salt Lake for participation and contacts with Emergency Communications leaders there.

The frequencies to be used are as follows:

80 Meters - 3.878

40 Meters - 7.280

20 Meters - 14.244

2 Meters - 146.415 / (backup frequency - 147.42)

The Sacramento Storehouse will monitor the 80 meter band at noon Pacific Time, and will continue to monitor for 15 minutes. At 12:15, the 40 meter band will be monitored for 15 minutes. At 12:30, the 20 meter band will be monitored for 15 minutes. At 12:45, the 2 meter band will be monitored for 15 minutes. At 1:00 PM, the same pattern will be followed, monitoring the 80, 40, 20 and 2 meter bands for 15 minutes each. The same pattern will be followed at 2 PM, concluding all activities at 3 PM.

Some additional suggestions are:

1) If you have contact with them, advertise this event to other stakes nationwide

2) If your stake is not having a get-together activity, plant yourself (with his permission) on the front lawn of your stake president, or wherever he is located on the 24th.

3) Have ward Emergency Communications specialists positioned at ward meetinghouses for ward-to-stake demonstrations. If the event is planned ahead of time, the ward specialists only need be stationed at the meetinghouses for 10 minutes, or the length of time it takes to make the ward-to-stake contact.

4) What naturally follows is stake ERC specialists making contacts with other stakes and the Storehouse Emergency Communications specialist.

5) This event is completely voluntary, but participation will allow us to demonstrate to Priesthood leadership of the effectiveness and utility of the Emergency Communications program. It also has the potential of fostering others' interest in the program. This event will also give us practice that will be very useful in determining our own readiness.

6) Invite your stake president to witness the contacts, and even better, allow him to transmit to wards, other stakes, the storehouse and beyond.

Hams who are not members of the LDS Church are welcome to participate.

I finally got through on 40 meters this afternoon during the last segment. 20 meters was actually stronger, but I couldn't get through the pileup. Anyone else work AF6TR in Sacramento?

Hello Dennis,

I didn't realize there was another LDS FD, although I should have figured that there would be something on the 24th.

I did look on 20M on the 20th of July for PSK contacts as per http://www.ldsfieldday.net/

Finally did make one contact.

Maybe next year!

That should have read "I did look on 20M on the 20th and 21st of July..."

Looking forward to LDS FD. Glad someone thought of the idea for doing it.

I would second the idea of doing a ward-stake communications test with priesthood leaders. We try to do this biannually and it has been something the hams look forward to, and it allows the priesthood leaders to see us in action.

Looking forward to getting some of our techs on the HF bands making contacts.

Catch you on the air.
