Office 2007 on new machines?

#1

Post by nutterb »

My stake just finished distributing new PCs to each unit, and I was surprised to see Microsoft Office 2007 loaded on it. This was a pleasant surprise, as I found myself terribly frustrated with Open Office Base, and am happy to be working with Microsoft Access for a few things.

But my question is this--Are all the new machines being loaded with Office 2007, or is that just my stake? I ask because if it's a more widespread thing, I might be asking for input on some of the things I put together as they might be nice to share. If it's just my stake, however, I might not worry too much about making generalizable solutions.

I have to say this is the first I've heard of Office coming on Church PCs.

Make sure it's not a trial version. That's quite common on new PCs. You may have gotten a wrong image.

Gosh, it would be great if Access were generally available. (Hard to believe it is affordable.) I find the word processor and spreadsheet apps in Open Office to be usable, but for database work I would rather use a rock and a sharp stick than try to accomplish much with Open Office Base.

As far as I know the only office suite distributed with Church administrative computers is OpenOffice. You may want to contact your stake technology specialist and see if there is a license for each machine that has it loaded. It may have been loaded by mistake. It is the STS's responsibility to make sure that each piece of software installed is properly licensed.

OpenOffice is on the Optiplex 780s the FHCs got, my center has one and I had to add some updates to FamilyInsight, etc. and saw that is still on them.

I'll check Sunday to see if there's anything related to Microsoft Office, and there might even be a version newer than that since, so this could have been put on by mistake, possibly at the assembly phase at the vendor level.

MS Office Not Found

I distributed and set up 9 new admin computers in our stake in December 2009. MS Office was NOT included. Neither was OpenOffice, BTW, I had to download it.

I checked an Optiplex 780 that the FHC has, it didn't have Microsoft Office 2007, but it did have OpenOffice already in.

The odd thing is that the Internet Explorer browser was not accessible via the Patron mode, but if you go into Administrator mode, it's there. The browser set up was Chrome, which many are not familiar with. It's only on this and one other machine, and it was also the first install of Chrome I've actually encountered (at home I work on an older Win2K machine).

I can't find anything to make me think that it's a trial version of Office, and the STS didn't bother to load Open Office onto the machine, which would be uncharacteristic of my STS (he's pretty thorough). So it appears I may just be lucky.

In that case, I won't worry too much about shrinking down any Office applications I create to post here (although there likely won't be a lot since I use other software for most of what I do).

Is it possible that your stake decided to purchase MS Office for its units? I think the version that includes Access is fairly pricey.

I think that's the most likely explanation. We live a life of luxury here in the midwest.
