Transfering Missionary Funds

Is it appropriate for a stake to deposit "excess missionary funds" received from wards directly into the General Missionary category, instead of depositing them to the Ward Missionary category and then writing a check to CHQ?

No, that is not correct. The funds are used for different purposes. I asked this specific question of the Finance Department as was told that I was to follow the instructions for writing a check to CHQ (see the wiki under Remitting Surplus Missionary Funds for details).
