What software is the new Calendar based on?

What calendar are you referring to?
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

Are these projects open source in the sense that I could use them for a project outside the church's site?

It's not really open source. A better term would be "community developed projects."

Just curious, but why not open source them? Is it too much overhead? Could someone fork what's already done? (this is meant to be a compliment of what's already been done, not a criticism =)
