Mls 3.0.3

#1

Post by atticusewig »

Received a MLS message yesterday that
MLS 3.0.3 is coming in the next 2 weeks.

Any word on the features and/or fixes ?

Last update did some weird things to our
Callings, so going to print those out
before the download. Any changes relating
to Callings? - expanded Standard Calling list,
or the use of Standard callings in custom
organizations ?

I hope it's not just another language pack.
As more languages are added, it would be
nice to make the language packs
add-ons that are requested instead of
forced additions to MLS. Like the way
you can request an old financial statement,
a system could be in place to request the
Icelandic language pack. Based on the
comments from the recent TechTalk about
the countless languages the church works
with, it will become necessary for a more
modularized and "optional" language approach
to minimize waste of bandwidth and MLS
system usage.
Another thing that might be interesting
once an optional language pack system is
put in place, would be to open up the translation
of the Strings in MLS to the Community. I remember
once helping a Spanish-speaking branch with their
finances, and the clerk laughed at the translation
of "Reconciliation" saying that the word used by MLS was
only for Reconciliation between people who had been
fighting, and the translators should have used something
else for reconciling money.

I saw the same message yesterday. As I recall, the message did list at least some of the changes in this update. The list did mention bug fixes related Callings.

MLS 3.0.3 was released on 1 October 2009. It is available at mls.lds.org for download (see MLS installation and repair for instructions). It will be downloaded to unit computers during the next transmission.

The release notes list only one item as having been changed:
File Errors during Send/Receive Changes. There were some errors during "Send/Receive Changes" receiving files concerning leadership callings from the administration office. This has been corrected.

Release Notes lacking

#4

Post by atticusewig »

I have often found the release notes to be
pretty lacking when describing changes.

I know when there is a major point release,
there probably is not a need for a 20 page changelog,
but in the MLS message about 3.0.3 it mentions the
addition of Hungarian, fixes to callings, etc.
Shouldn't these be included in the Release notes ?

All I can confirm right now is that Hungarian has
been added, some send/receive transmission errors
have been fixed, and in one of the forms for the Stake
the drop-down box allows members of the Stake
Presidency to be chosen from the Elders, and not
just the High Priests. Surely, those are worth a
mention in the release notes ?

It would seem that comments from a revision control
system would be a good place to start to fill out the
release notes. For example, it I were to commit a
code change, I would have to enter a comment saying
something like "Fixed CDOL transmission errors", or if
a bugtracker is also used in the development process,
"Fixed bug #6728". Without revealing too much confidential
information, could someone share some of the details of
MLS development ?

One of our ward clerks had an issue after the MLS 3.0.3 upgrade came through today - the leadership callings were all deleted from his database . I had the upgrade come through on the stake computer today with no problems. I seem to remember reading about something similar on a recent forum post regarding a previous update.

Fortunately the ward clerk has a hard copy of the callings, and can re-enter the data, but it's a bit of a worry when a software upgrade eats part of your database. However, this is one of the reasons we do backups, right? :D

Update:

Found the post where I had read this before - here. Looking at it again, I believe that this ward clerk had not run the Custom Positions Review wizard after the initial upgrade to MLS 3.0. Bit of a trap for young players there. I guess I need to follow up with the clerks to make sure they actually follow these instructions...
