refund tithing, wrong amount?

#1

Post by funaddict-p40 »

The Bishop just informed me that one of our members accidentally paid $2000 last week instead of $200 that they intended to, and they desperately need the money($1800). Is there a way we can do this? I know about tithing being a voluntary, non-refundable donation, etc., but how can we make this right?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I would seek advice from Local Unit Support.

One way that it could be done mechanically is to change the donation to be $200 Tithing and $1800 in some subcategory of Other, and then you could write a check from Other to the member. But when you make any corrections to batches, you have to provide the reason within Church policy (see the wiki article on Donations), and this change seems like it would be a stretch.

I wonder about the possibility of writing a check from Fast Offering for the amount. And then telling them there is no way to refund tithing, and asking them to pay what would have been their tithing to the Fast Offering until the FO is repayed?

That would have a odd effect on the year end tax statement since they'd be getting a write-off on both the original donation and the repayment.

Another way is to have a member who give them 1800$ and have it back 200$ per mounth.

If I had done that, the check would have bounced, and there would not be a problem (except for cleaning up the paperwork).

I vote for the call to Local Unit Support.

I will second this. It's best to have the local leader contact Headquarters.
