Actually they are standard positions (callings) since we are discussing the standard positions list in the stake and ward installations of MLS 3.0.Edward Lalone wrote:No because those are custom out of unit callings and not standard callings.

If this were true then there would only need to be nine positions listed at this point.Edward Lalone wrote:I also suspect that the ones that are being standardized at this point are the ones who will be given special access to certain websites or parts of websites (in their stake and wards) in the near future (30 of the 69) and will need to be standardized while the other 39 don't.

The Church is clearly planning ahead, so I don't think it's reasonable to say only 9 positions would be needed right now. We have no way of knowing what new sites (or new access to existing sites) might be under development, perhaps even in pilot programs or beta testing, right now or very soon.jdlessley wrote:If this were true then there would only need to be nine positions listed at this point.Edward Lalone wrote:I also suspect that the ones that are being standardized at this point are the ones who will be given special access to certain websites or parts of websites (in their stake and wards) in the near future (30 of the 69) and will need to be standardized while the other 39 don't.
Remember that the release notes say:
As the Church begins to provide local leaders and members access to Church applications and programs over the Web, the Church must limit access to authorized users only. For example, someone with the position of “Ward Clerk” in MLS could access a clerk Web site, but someone with the custom position of “Senior Clerk” would not be admitted to the site.

I was taking the point Edward Lalone made to the extreme. Within the nine positions, I can immediately come up with one position, Stake Assistant Clerk--Technology Spc, that is not listed in the ward out of unit positions that has been given special access to websites or applications.Alan_Brown wrote:The Church is clearly planning ahead, so I don't think it's reasonable to say only 9 positions would be needed right now. I am just trying to understand why only 30 positions out of the 69 stake positions are listed in the ward standard positions list. There just does not seem to be any correlation as to why those 30 were chosen and not others.

We do know that at very least the messaging portion of the new LUWS is planning on providing email groups based on many positions at both the stake and ward level. That isn't close to release (or even a pilot program) yet but I'm sure the church wants to have all the infrastructure in place for that and other uses.

Think CDOL
Thinking of future possiblities gives me goose bumps. However, as evidenced elsewhere in the Forum, we have direct evidence that CDOL access has expanded based on positions listed in MLS. So the first application of the standardized positions is already being put to use...welcome use.Alan_Brown wrote:We have no way of knowing what new sites (or new access to existing sites) might be under development, perhaps even in pilot programs or beta testing, right now or very soon.

Bug? I went through and standardized most of our calling names within the custom positions review. Fast forward a week or two and I noticed that one of the callings I changed was back in the custom calling name (I noticed because it is misspelled). I went back to the custom positions review and noticed all the callings I changed were back in their custom names! I went through and changed them all back to the standardized names. After doing so I went to Sunday school to assign classes to the "Instructors" and noticed there were now duplicates of all my new standardized callings. What gives?

The beta version of MLS 3.0 was likely rev.'d from beta 6 to beta 7 during that time. I wonder if that might have accounted for some of the duplicates you encountered.studentclerk wrote:Fast forward a week or two and I noticed that one of the callings I changed was back in the custom calling name (I noticed because it is misspelled).

Just an observation. BSA has not had den mothers for at least 30 years. The position title is den leader.

Noticed there is no provision for a Sacrament Program Specialist.
It's probably too late for the 3.0 release, but an extra field say
"Calling description" or "Notes" for each calling record would be nice.
For example, I might have 3 "Den Mother"s and would
tie them in to this "official" calling name, but for local use
it would be nice to be able to say that one "Den Mother" was
in charge of "Bobcats", one in charge of "Wolves", and one in
charge of the "Bears".
Basically, this "notes" field would allow standardized callings names
to be used, yet maintain the details local leaders need to operate.
Without such a field, leaders would be more inclined to use the
more descriptive custom calling of "Bear Den Mother" instead of
the generic "Den Mother".

The last time I looked at the Cub Scout program, the den designations were Tiger Cubs (which the Church doesn't participate in), Wolf Den, Bear Den, and Webelos Den. Bobcat is a rank/award within Cub Scouts, much like Tenderfoot is a rank/award in BSA, but does not designate a given Den or age group.atticusewig wrote:For example, I might have 3 "Den Mother"s and would tie them in to this "official" calling name, but for local use it would be nice to be able to say that one "Den Mother" was in charge of "Bobcats", one in charge of "Wolves", and one in charge of the "Bears".
You can be in a Wolf Den and not have earned the Wolf Badge, but all Cub Scouts must earn the Bobcat badge first, regardless of what Den they are in.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cub_Scouti ... of_AmericaCub Scouts who join a pack are assigned to dens with six to eight members, usually based on age: Tiger Cubs (first grade or 7 years old), Wolf Cub Scouts (second grade or 8 years old), Bear Cub Scouts (third grade or 9 years old) and Webelos Scouts (fourth and fifth grades or 10 years old).

With that distinction, it makes sense to standardize the Dens in MLS to have:
Wolf Den Leader (for boys age 8),
Bear Den Leader (for boys age 9),
Webelos Den Leader (for boys age 10),
and possibly just a generic Den Leader for those situations where there aren't enough boys to justify breaking the Dens up by age group.
