Mormon Game Mods

#1

Post by atticusewig »

I remember reading a post a while back that encouraged
creating a "Mormon-version" of various open-source
projects, such as a Firefox web browser with internet
filtering built-in, a special copy of OpenOffice.org with
a connection to the LDS gospel library so you can
plagari----I mean, it could help you write Sacrament
Meeting talks, and so forth. All of which is great for
people who are serious all the time.

How about Games ?

Let's face it, games are the real reason we have
computers that are so "loaded" today. You don't need
a graphics card to run a wordprocessor, or a dual-core
machine to run most spreadsheets.

Personally I'd start with FreeCiv, which is a conquer-the-world
game that is very easy to mod. We could easily create a "ruleset"
that would add "Mormons", and list the cities in order that they
were settled. If we wanted, we could also add a military unit
called a "Danite".

Of course, most commercial games can be modded nowadays
so why limit it only to open-source ?

What games do you play, and what mods can you dream up
for them that adds a Mormon dimension ?

This must fall under perfecting the saints somehow, right? Or maybe it could fall under proclaiming the gospel if we have main characters quote enough scripture!

Why focus mods to "Mormon" versions?

Maybe there is a niche market of people who want software developed by LDS for LDS, but you would get much more interest from the community at large with functionality focused on the family and values. LDS families aren't the only ones concerned about good entertainment without the violence and pornography associated with the mainstream versions.

For example, why start a completely new browser project just to integrate pornography filtering? You could add it directly to the FireFox project as an optional feature (maybe a plug-in?), and protect get it exposed to a much wider audience.

I think it would be great if someone came up with a very entertaining book of mormon game. Perhaps instead of codes to progress / activate new levels or features we could have them look stuff up in the book of mormon. Might help would be missionaries learn their required scriptures....

I think the Danite would need to replace the roving barbarians vs becoming a military unit.

I choose to be a gadianton robber... i'm assuming they would act like "ROGUES" do in world of warcraft right? :P

face it.... very high development costs and not a large enough "mormon" consumer market to make it worth your while

I am concerned about what my kids see online...and in any game i'm also concerned what my kids might see/hear if i am online. it is not enough to wait till the kids are in bed...

I use all the parental controls in the game i play. I will also sit with my children as they get online to play their games.

Overall though even if there were a game geared entirely toward the christian community there are still people who would abuse things...vigilance is the key...
