No Block Page?

#1

Post by mkmurray »

Now I'll preface my following questions with the fact that I'm just a lowly ward membership clerk. This week we got a note from our stake clerks that our building (and consequently our ward computers) now have access to DSL broadband internet. Boy what a welcome surprise when doing Send/Receive from MLS! :)

I'm assuming we are running the "LDS Restricted" filtering, because I'm only able to successfully visit sites directly owned by the Church. However, as a test to see the block page (and consequently confirm which filtering exactly is being used), I tried to type in a few well-known domains like MSN and Google. The result I get is a request that never returns as far as I can tell. It returned once with a 404 "Page Not Found" and the URL was to an IP address and it also had "blockpage" or something in the address. However, I haven't been able to repeat this one occurrence. I only get a never ending Microsoft animation in the top-right corner.

Again, I'm not anyone with access to the hardware at all. But it seems like this behavior is not the default for filtered sites. Any ideas of what I can check? Or should I really just be contacting my stake clerks?

Thanks.

By default IE 6 and earlier will not display custom error pages such as the WebSense orange 'Filtered Content' message unless they are larger than 512 bytes, but will instead display the 'friendlier' 404 Page Not Found message. This default behavior can be changed under Tools | Internet Options by clicking on the Advanced tab and un-checking the "Show friendly HTTP error messages" check box.

If that does not work then there may be a temporary problem with the WebSense host servers or the ISP proxy servers. The filtering is still working but the proxy (ISP) servers will generate a 404 error when the remote host (WebSense) has refused a TCP connection which prevents the proxy server from satisfying the requested web page.

I'd contact the Stake Technology Specialist as it's his responsibility and ask what filtering has been applied. If there are any questions after you make the contact then the STS can call the GSD and inquire.

Have your Stake Technology Specialist take a look at it. Generally when we activate the cisco asa 5505 or script a Pix 501 for church sites we will have them test there filter by going to www.gambling.com, if it doesnt get there, you are good.. if you can reach it, you have a problem and need to have the STS contact the Global Service Center to fix that issue.
