Extraneous pages on www.mormon.org

#1

Post by dmaynes »

Techgy asked a question about LDS Account on http://www.mormon.org, so I poked around and found a lot of apparently old and obsolete pages.

Here's the link to Techgy's question: http://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2840

I assume the pages are there for a reason. Most of these pages appear to old and obsolete, but I suppose some could be new. Perhaps the answer to Techgy's question is that LDS Account will be coming shortly to http://www.mormon.org.

My question is about these extraneous pages. Are they just an oversight? Or, are some of the pages being found because of new plans for http://www.mormon.org?

Here are some pages that look like they are old:
http://www.mormon.org/book/0,9768,1652-84,00.html
http://www.mormon.org/homefront/0,15902,3865-1,00.html
http://www.mormon.org/welcome/0,6929,403-18,00.html
http://www.mormon.org/question/talk/0,8 ... -1,00.html
http://www.mormon.org/bookofmormon
http://www.mormon.org/nativity
http://www.mormon.org/truthrestored
http://www.mormon.org/freevideo/1,10163 ... 91,00.html
Copyright dates of 2002 and 2005 are found on these web pages.

I noticed that the most recent pages appear to have the URL prefix:
http://www.mormon.org/mormonorg/eng/

I couldn't tell if this is an old page or new page, but I couldn't navigate to it from the http://www.mormon.org site. I assume that it is an old page.

http://www.mormon.org/virtualchapel/virtualchapel.html

I assume this is old because the current website does not present information about what the typical service is like, as in this this page describing a baptismal service (2002):

http://www.mormon.org/learn/0,8672,1574-84,00.html

I found these pages using a search on Google for "www.mormon.org" and then clicking "More results from www.mormon.org »"

There must be some link on the website that has allowed the Google web-crawler to navigate into these old pages.

Thanks,
Dennis

I had considered that and it's certainly possible. However, the other sites that were listed already had a member logon area. It's not something that keeps me up at night. ;) Just a curiosity. Thanks for the thought.

As to why the "extra" pages are there is still unanswered. As they are not linked one would have to assume that they are residue from previous edits of the site that have not been removed.

These are probably tied to specific URLs used to track response to specific marketing campaigns. For example, I remember seeing a Homefront commercial a year or two ago that listed a website of http://www.mormon.org/family, which I just now tested and got redirected to the Homefront page you listed. I suspect the same for the other "extranneous pages" you discovered.
