With Google's recent startup "Google Apps" now might be a smart time for the church IT department to look into collaborating with Google. The shift from our current Web 1.0 look and functionality to a Web 2.0 interface could save the church time money and be very reliable. If we could embed Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar, Docs & Spreadsheets, Page Creator with mobile access we would be on our way to improving our church communication needs all the way down to the ward and calling level. Take a look and see what I mean. http://www.google.com/a/
Google maps could also be added. You could see where everyone lives in your ward without compromising members infromation, as was a problem in the past. http://beta.tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?t=141
One other thing worth mentioning is that our ward emergency plan has been laid out in "Google earth" the program, and I am sure that could become another effective tool at our disposal.
Either way, let me know what you think. There are a lot of possibilities.
