Disposing of toner cartridges

#1

Post by dmaynes »

According to the post http://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2460 (I couldn't reply to the above post because access has been restricted), I should be able to go to the Xerox's website and print shipping labels for returning old toner cartridges via UPS.

I can't find our copier model/toner cartridge code on the Green World Alliance website.
http://www.xerox.com/about-xerox/recycling/enus.html

The website indicates if the item number is not found that the cartridge should be recycled locally.
http://www.xerox.com/about-xerox/recycl ... /enus.html

Is it possible that there is an error on the website and the toner cartridges are really supposed to be recycled?

If not, I am unsure where to recycle the cartridges locally.

Our copier is: Xerox Work Centre 4150
Toner reorder number is: 006R01275
We are in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

Thanks,
Dennis

I received a reply from the Xerox webmaster on this question. First, I have indicated the question I asked. And, then I have pasted in the reply. I hope this helps others who may have a similar question.

Question:
We have a Xerox Work Centre 4150 that uses toner cartridges 006R01275. We were recycling using DHL, but of course, they are now not available. We can't find the item in the drop down menu list. The website says the cartridge should be recycled locally. Is this true? Or is it an oversight? Please, any help you can provide will be appreciated.
Answer from Xerox:
We appreciate your interest in our recycling programs. The Xerox Green World Alliance is a worldwide initiative that encourages customers to recycle or dispose of Xerox brand used supplies in the most environmentally friendly way. Xerox toner and drum cartridges are safe for the environment. We encourage our customers to recycle or dispose of these containers locally. If you would prefer to have Xerox recycle these empty containers for you, please visit our Green World Alliance web site to download pre-paid UPS return labels: http://www.xerox.com/gwa

On the Xerox Green World Alliance Homepage select <<United States>> in the dropdown list and click on Continue.

On the next page please select Multifunction, Copiers, Production Printers and Fax Machines and then click on Continue. Choose Option 3
.

Please follow the Label Download and Shipping Instructions on the next page.

NOTE: Each label contains a unique tracking number and bar code. You can elect to print up to 15 labels at a time for returning multiple items. Please affix one label per box/carton. Please do not print one label and make copies of it.
It appears that Xerox believes local recycling for these toner cartridges is reasonable, but they will help if you don't have a local recycling solution.

We wanted to follow the policy and send the toner cartridge back to Xerox because that is the procedure we had been following before DHL ceased business operations.

Thanks,
Dennis

Alternatively, check with your local elementary school. I take our Xerox, HP and other used cartridges to my elementary school in Orem because they some how get credit/money for the cartridges. They will let me know when they won't accept them any more.

Recycling HP Toner Cartridges

#4

Post by aebrown »

I just went through the process of printing a recycling label for an HP toner cartridge. It is quite different from the process described in How should used toner & drum cartridges be disposed of?

Fortunately, the process has been simplified dramatically. You don't have to specify what kind of cartridge it is -- all toner cartridges for any printer go through the same simpler process.

But someone from LDS Copier Administration should review the HP recycling instructions and update them to better match HP's current process.

Our ward materials center has an HP laser printer. Should we recycle the HP printer cartridges to some central location or just try to recycle them locally? If it is to go to some central place, do you have any information as to how this is done?
Thanks,

You can take it to any place that recycles cartridges. I take ours to the nearest Staples store since that is where we get our new cartridges from when ordered through the Online Store.
