When you create an account, make it optional to enter membership number & confirmation date. This would give you access to only the scriptures/gospel library. Then, in the future, one could go in and add a membership number & confirmation date, if they "upgraded to the full product".

We are working on solutions that will make the whole account creation / signup / login less painful.

Tom
That would be great. Some of our members have trouble navigating through the sign-up process. One sister stopped in the middle for some reason and didn't complete the process. This messed up her account and showed that she was registered in the admin screens but told her she wasn't when she tried to log in. It took a call to Salt Lake to get it fixed.

What types of changes are on the planning board for the account creation and login?

I'm not sure of the specifics other than they are aware of the problems and are working on solutions.

I hope they are working to unify the lds.org and familysearch logins. That would be nice.

I think LDSCatalog.com login should be unified into LDS.org's login.

GIDS (Global Identity Directory)

I asked Tom (through PM) about the effort to unify Church logins. As it seems neutral enough for public posting, I've quoted his response:
tomw wrote:GID (Global Identity Directory) is a project we have here that will unify church-wide all of the logins. When completed, it will allow us to know much more about the logged-in user than we currently do. For example, when you currently login to lds.org or LUWS, we don't know much about you and so we don't show you much information. However, with GIDS, we could give you access to more tools based upon your calling.
So, in short, I hope it will eventually unify LDS.org, LDSCatalog.com, FamilySearch.org, the ward websites, and other Church-sponsored sites (perhaps even this site eventually ;)). I would hope they'd consider some ways to allow non-member registration as some have suggested as well as a process to perhaps base your account on a GUID so you can change your screenname at will.

And maybe even MLS? ;)

I had to help a stake councilor once. He was having problems logging into LUWS. After some back and forth, it turned out he was trying to use his MLS login to get into LUWS. I had to explain it didn't work that way and he'd have to set up an LUWS account.
