PAF For Mac?

#1

Post by zaneclark »

Does anyone know anything about the Mac friendly version of PAF that Logan Allred was working on a couple of years ago? I think it might have changed the name to MAF but that is about all I know about it. I was very disappointed when they stopped supporting PAF for Mac several years ago and was hoping Logan had something going.

I believe that Information and download is available from:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/macpaf/

I have not downloaded it yet, but it looks promising.

Darwine and PAF

Use Darwine.

Just do a web search for "Darwine PAF"

Here's a couple of links that might help:

http://tech.lds.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-632.html

Darwine is a derivative of Wine (for Linux). Both provide Mac or Linux a library of code that most windows applications use. It is not a Windows emulator (Wine Is Not an Emulator). There is good info about it in the first link.

PAF under Wine, including some info about using on Mac

#4

Post by rmrichesjr »

As I posted in the earlier threads in this forum about PAF for Mac, this URL may also be useful:

http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=1706

There is a note specifically about using PAF under Wine on a Mac. If that note needs correction or update, please email me. As one of the volunteer maintainers of that page, I want to keep it current. I don't use a Mac, so I have to rely on those who do for corrections and updates.

Leopard

I am about to load Leopard on my laptop so I can use the PC version of PAF. Does anyone have any comments/insights on this issue? There is a serious lack of genealogy applications native to OSX. I have been using GEDitCom for a couple of years now but the Temple-Ready function is clunky and outdated at best. One of the good things about GEDitCom is the ability to edit most of the functions. It is VERY configurable. I would appreciate any guidance in this area. By the way, I went to the SourceForge link posted here and there were no projects available for download. Was I going about it the wrong way?

Has anyone tried the Mac version of FamilyInsight. It has been available for several weeks now and I have not heard any reports for any Mac users about FamilyInsight. It is produced by Ohana Software the creator of PAFInsight. It has the ability to sync with newFamilySearch. They have a 60 day free trial.

FamilyInsight for Mac

I have tried using it but you must use a gedcom so it is still awkward on a Mac. It would really be nice to have it interfaced to something like Reunion.

FamilyInsight does have pedigree views as well as individual views, unless the Mac version is different. They are hid away in the menus so some people are not aware that they are part of the program. Have you tried using the pedigree views.

I agree it would be better to have a full function program, but it is at least one option for Mac useres to sync with nFS.

Have you looked at Reunion by Leister Productions? (http://www.leisterpro.com) or iFamily for Leopard (http://www.ifamilyforleopard.com). Both are highly rated.

FamilyInsight

Yes I have tried the pedigree view. I am still in the process of looking at FamilyInsight and it is a great improvement for LDS and the Mac.

I have also looked at Reunion and it is a good basic program. It lacks 2 things that I consider a must. 1. The searching of the internet with out having to reinter the data. 2. IGI or nFS search. In fact all of the genealogy programs for the Mac do not have any support for LDS with the exception of storing the data you enter. Nothing like you find in RootsMagic, Legacy or other Windows programs.

For non LDS Reunion it is a good program. If there were an API where you could pass data between Reunion and FamilyInsight this would answer one of my concerns.

Just my rambling. I am running virtualbox on my Mac and have both RootsMagic and Legacy installed and running under VirtualBox. RootsMagic seems to run better with network files than Legacy but both are good genealogy programs.
