New OpenOffice Versions

New OpenOffice Versions
I was wondering what the policy was on updating OpenOffice to newer versions. The last time we got an update was when we installed the Desktop 5.5 image. I know that OpenOffice v3.0 has just been released. Are we to wait for updates via MLS? Our computers are not connected to the Internet, so I would have to download the exe at home and then update the PCs myself. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Contact the Stake Technical Specialist (STS) and have Open Office updated. The STS has responsibility to maintain your ward computer. Updates to Open Office do not come through the MLS software. They are handled separately.

I don't think there's a policy either way on updating OpenOffice. I would contact the STS just to coordinate with him what's happening. I'd think it would be wise to keep the sake on the same version to avoid problems when exchanging files.
Due to the size of the OpenOffice install, I can't see it getting updated via dial-up.
Since OpenOffice is totally free, there's no legal/license issues involved.
Since I am the STS for my stake, I have been updating as I put in new machines. The new 3.0 version has some significant improvements. One of them is the ability to read MS Office 2007 files. That can be important for people bringing files from home or work.

Anyone have experience using the Base application (the OpenOffice database module) in v 3.0?
I downloaded the earlier version and did not find it acceptable for my purposes, but it seemed to have a lot of potential. It would be nice to have a portable and accessible tool to build small database applications for sharing. MS Access is a good tool for projects of that scale, except for the sharing part.

Ver 3 is "legal"

As you know sometimes we can't get a clearly stated policy and have to resort to reading the tea leaves. I think the point elderj1 was trying to make is since mls.lds.org points to OpenOffice site rather then a specific version, then it must be acceptable to load whatever is current.
