Trouble with MLS 2.9 download

#1

Post by johnsco-p40 »

When MLS 2.9 downloaded and installed on the Ward machines everything was successful. HOWEVER, the machine running the Stake MLS now shows no users available, which I can believe beings none of the Stake clerks and such are associated with a Ward because this is a Stake machine. Right now when I as the Stake Tech specialist log into MLS I type in my normal username and an empty list shows with no users in the list. No one can log into MSL on this computer.
Anyone else have issues with the Stake machines running MLS 2.9?
The release notes say; Under user rights, each user name should now be associate with a member name and membership record number. How is that going to happen on a machine running Stake MLS?

Need consultation
Thanks in advance.

With regard to the general problem of loosing usernames, look at this thread starting at the 7th post for solutions. Your situation may be a little more complicated however, since your loss of usernames coincides with an MLS upgrade. If you follow the steps recommended in the referenced thread, you will most likely be restoring pre-2.9 data into a 2.9 environment. Hopefully, MLS will be smart enough to detect that it needs to convert the data. Unfortunately, I don't have time to test this scenario. Hopefully someone else can do this and report back.

The disappearance of the list of users has nothing to do with the new user association requirements of MLS 2.9. I'm not sure why it would have happened to your stake at the same time as your upgrade to MLS 2.9, but I haven't seen any posts here about that problem, and yet we have heard of many many stakes that have upgraded without any problem like you describe.

Most often this problem is associated with improper computer shut down procedures. Bur regardless of the cause, the fix is the same. There is a troubleshooting article on clerk.lds.org that explains what to do. You can find it at here. (But note that Step 4 of option A is strangely worded. Just open the most recent mlsData-backup folder -- it is not under the mlsData folder.)

Actually, at the stake level, this is quite simple. Stake MLS contains membership records for every member of the stake, so you can associate the correct member with each user of Stake MLS. It's not a problem that those membership records can't be edited at the stake level. I have done this for all the users in my stake who use Stake MLS.

Although the technique proposed in that thread will most likely work (I've done it myself), the official procedure I referenced in my previous post is less error prone and less drastic, so I'd recommend you try it first.

Indeed MLS will convert the data from 2.8 to 2.9 format. The data upgrade happens as the database is opened for the first time with the new version; it has nothing to do with the installation process. I have done this several times.

Thanks, I was not aware of the troubleshooting article.

One of the easiest mistakes to make is to close the MLS program by clicking on the "X" in the right-upper-hand corner of the open window. This is a No-No as mentioned in the troubleshooting document reference by Alan in the above quote.

I had the occasion to use this just this morning for my own ward. Option "A" worked for me and had everyone back and smiling in short notice.

Just be sure that you follow the steps exactly and always have a current backup.
