RECORD NUMBER FOR INACTIVE CHILD

#1

Post by RISH »

I am a father of seven children . . . with only three of them active. I would like to create a familysearch.org account for one of my inactive daughters to try and get her to help me with our family's genealogy. QUESTION: Is there a way---since she is an adult---that I, as her father, can get access to her membership number?

You can ask the ward clerk for a IOS, which will list the children. If it's not there, then the answer is it would probably be against policy.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

Only if she is a member of your ward and of your household on church records. In that case you can get her MRN from the Directory on lds.org. Otherwise, no. She would need to get the number from her local ward.

However, depending on what kind of genealogical work she would be doing, she may be able to do a lot without adding her MRN to her LDS account.

As far as I know, having the MRN gives you three things on Family Search.

First, you can see your own information from church membership records and very limited information about living parents and children. But any changes or additions made to those records can't be seen anyone else (at least until the person is dead).

Second, you can see LDS ordinance information. That may or may not be important to the work you hope to get her to help with.

Third, you can get access to certain 3rd party sites for free and thus get access to additional scanned and indexed records. This is probably more valuable but Family Search has many records available for everyone even without this additional access.

So if she isn't willing to reach out to get her MRN, you could still set her up with an LDS Account and try to get her involved with those limitations.

No, the IOS does not include record numbers for children.

I would also question the propriety and legality of creating an account for an adult child. Creating a FamilySearch account requires you to agree to the FamilySearch Rights and Use Information, which includes this:
FamilySearch wrote:In consideration for the use of this site, you represent that (a) you have read and agree to the terms of this Agreement, and (b) that you are legally able to register (if required) to use this site and any other FamilySearch affiliated site. If you submit personal information to this site, you agree to provide true, accurate, current, and complete information about yourself (including during the registration process) and maintain and keep current and accurate this information about yourself, should it ever change. If you provide false, inaccurate, inappropriate, or libelous information or images, we may suspend or terminate your account and use of this site.
I don't see how you can honestly make those representations on behalf of someone else, unless you have power of attorney on their behalf.

I was assuming the OP was planning on just helping her set up her LDS Account. It would definitely be inappropriate to set up an LDS Account in someone else's name and use it yourself. But I'm not sure how that would be helpful in this situation.
