multiple down loads of library

#1

Post by glicurtis »

Why have there been so many down loads of the Gospel Library for Android phones and Kindle tablets? For every download that has been sent, time is spent re-downloading all previously downloaded books, lessons and other items. It is kind of annoying to have to do this and it has happen twice on a Sunday at Church. I have had to download everything 6 times in the last 3 weeks. I hope this will be resolved soon.
Thanks, Gerald Curtis (glicurtis@comcast.net)

The answer is a simple one: there has been a major update to the application. Rather than let the app sit with bugs, missing content, and other issues, the developers have chosen to release bug fixes as quickly as possible to reduce the issues users experience. You'll need to have patience as they work again toward a more polished app.

I have had the same problem and suspected this was a probable cause. To confirm, does the entire database need to download again with each update, or are these just fixes to the content which is now in a new format?

I have contained (but not solved) the data usage problem by limiting my downloads to WiFi only, although I notice that GL does not always honor that selection.

A concern of mine is if I get an update at home and not realize it until I get to the chapel. I use my Kindle for all my material and the WiFi in our building isn't the most reliable. I'm wondering if the church could hold off sending updates on Sunday? Until everything gets smoothed out, a possible solution is to make sure you have your content downloaded before you leave for church and put your device in airplane mode. This will keep updates from coming in and you won't have to worry.

Content is usually not updated on Sunday, unless there's a major issue like a missing book of scripture. But updates don't happen in the background – they only show up when the app is opened and if it's been 12 hours since the last check – so it may not get the newest updates until the next time you connect (i.e. at church). On Android, you can force it to check for updates by going to the main library and pulling down on the library.

This makes sense why I was getting updates at church. I had know idea I could pull down on the library menu bar to force updates, this is quite handy. Thank You!
