Office Starter not working after Win10 upgrade

#1

Post by krhinkey »

Our computer was updated to Windows 10 a few months back. Its a Lenovo Think Center machine. After the upgrade the Office 2010 starter program doesn't work any more. We have tons of files (word and excel) that we can use. I have tried to move some over to open office but its extremely time consuming. I have done a lot of research online and there are a lot of back and forth. some say office starter is compatible and some say its not. Has anyone here had this issue? Is there another program used that will open them? I looked into google docs but you have to log into chrome each time and its a pain. Any solutions being used out there? We are tempted to just use admin funds to buy a version of office. Is that allowed?

I'm not sure if that was on any of our machines. My own personal laptop seems to function fine after the Win10 update.

You shouldn't have to "move" your documents to Open Office. My experience is that Open Office and Libre Office will open Microsoft Office documents with little to no formatting issues. There is a setting somewhere in Open Office, or Libre Office, where you can set .docx, .xlsx, etc., files to open by default in Open Office and keep the MS Office file extension. You can also set the default applications in Windows.

When I switched to LibreOffice at home, I found that it would open any MS Word or Excel file. If it was a work file, I saved it again in the MS format so I could send it back to my day job. If it was a personal file, I saved it in LibreOffice/Open Office format (odt, ods, etc.) and then moved the MS formatted file to a temporary storage area as a backup for a few months in case I had any problems. I never needed any of those files and deleted them several months later when I was comfortable with LibreOffice.
