Sleeping computers & software pushes

#1

Post by mprusse »

I read that we should be leaving our ward computers on for 5 hours or more each week so it can receive Sophos updates & software pushes. Yet, if the computer is set to sleep, I'm not sure if those pushes can take place.

Does anyone know if those updating activities will wake the computers or whether we need to adjust the sleep settings to a much longer time?

Thanks.

If the computer hybernates, it will not come on. If the computer sleeps, it should. With that principle in mind, you may want to work with your stake technology specialist to determine the best settings for your administrative computer.

To complicate matters, some Internet service providers log off the service unless the computer is actually using it. This will also affect whether or not headquarters will be able to awaken the computer upon request.

The default setting for Clerk computers is to Never sleep, while powered up. If this setting has been changed to anything different, then it is debatable especially for the W10 upgrade offer, which requires the computer to be on 24 hours a day until the upgrade occurs. I can understand changing the sleep time to something different, but that won't help the next person, called to be a Clerk for instance, who doesn't have the deeper technical know how about all the under hood settings.

Under normal circumstances, the Clerk computers being ON for 5 hours a week is easily doable. In my Ward, the computer is normally ON for 8 hours (Includes pre Church meetings) on a Sunday. Plus at least another 3-4 hours during the week for other events.

It is? None of mine were that way. I don't recall changing that as part of my setup.

Nearly all of the machines in my stake updated themselves without my help.

Likewise, I have never changed the sleep settings, or any of the the other 14+ Clerk computers I've re-imaged over the past 15 months. The default setting, I checked yesterday, when my own Clerk computer upgraded to W10, was and has always been set to never sleep.

The screen saver, which in W10, is the other option to change on the same page. Is set to 15 minutes.

What are they set to, on yours?

Considering that all but one has upgraded, I don't know. That computer has some problems. BES isn't running. But it's setting is to hibernate after 2 hours.

Once it hibernates, it is off and will not awaken. If you don't have the upgrade yet, you might want to change the setting on that one.

I'm not sure about that one. It's possible a timed/scheduled event may still wake it up.

That particular machine is messed up anyway. It's being replaced, not upgraded.
