Printing to FHC using wireless network

#1

Post by jmcg »

In the ward that I am serving in, we have a cisco 811 FW/Integrate Service Router. The FHC is connected to port 2 and is in the 10.167.xx.xx subnet/ vlan80. In the FHC there is a Lexmark MX511 that has a 10.167.74.33 ip address. Our family history consultant wants to be able to have patrons who are connected wireless to be able to print to the Lexmark printer. However, they are not in the same subnet as the printer and printing does not work. I have been able to add the printer and can ping the printer from the wireless 192.168.xx.xx network, but printing does not work. I am assuming the ICMP packets are routed but FW rules are keeping print jobs from being routed from the 192.168 to the 10.167.

Is there any way that I can have FH patrons print to the Lexmark printer? Or do they have to use FHC computers only for printing?

I'm not sure as there is an answer for this. The folks in charge of the network are loth to create special on-off rules. And I'm not sure how open they will be to opening up connections between the networks at the same location.

Assuming you're the Stake Technology Specialist, you could call the Global Service Desk and see what they have to say.

I would tell the patrons to print to a PDF. They can keep all the PDFs they create. If they insist on printing the PDFs, they can either do so at home, or copy them to a flash drive and print them in the FHC from the flash drive.

Thank you for the replies. I am an assistant STS so I suppose I should contact my STS. The pdf idea is valid but not sure my FH consultant would remember how to do it once I show them. But, thank you for the suggestions.

One question that I have is are you using the printer name or on the computer are you using the IP address of the printer? The reason is that the printer name may not be resolving the IP address, but if you go directly to the IP address then I think it should work.

You can do this one of two ways. The first and probably the easiest is to create a TCP port on the workstation directly to the IP address of the printer. I hope that you put the printer on a static IP address and not using DHCP because going directly to the IP address will cause an issue if the printer's IP address change. All my printers that are connected to the network are statically assigned an address.

the second option is to go into c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and put the printer name in with the IP address in the hosts file so that it resolves the name to an IP address.

Hope this helps

Good point. The printer has to be set up on the device using the IP address, not the printer's name.

I hope so too, since it needs to be static to be properly supported by SLC.

See the Nelsonfam post HERE ("the 192.X network cannot use services on the Family History Center 10.X networks"). So only users connected to the FHC network can print to a FHC printer.
