If you have any questions regarding your stake’s federal identification number, contact Church Tax Administration.

As far as I know, stakes in the United States don't have their own tax ID numbers. The Church has a generic federal tax ID number (EIN) that applies to all units in the United States. You can find the Church EIN on your donor statement, which is available through the LDS.org Online Donations tool, and the EIN will be on the top-right corner of the statement.

Thanks for the help. I called the Church tax administration at 801-240-3003. They gave me a number that appears to be specific to my stake; or at least it's not the same as the number I've seen posted around that is supposed to apply to all US units.

OK, interesting. Does the number you got match the number on your donor statement?

No. Totally different. The number on my donor statement is the general U.S. number, 237300405.

I am glad you called. The 1099-MISC instructions said specifically NOT to use the general U.S. number shown on your donor statements.

Guess I should have looked at the 1099-MISC instructions before venturing an answer. :)

Are you kidding? Read the instructions? What a novel concept.

In all honesty, I couldn't have found them if I were looking for them, except that I had just happened to run across the Notice in the Official Communication Library a short time ago.

And I will admit that the Church EIN has been very tempting to use on occasion when it was difficult to find the correct information. Not a good idea, of course.
