Many households that are in the ward directory do not show up in the LCR system

We have been having difficulty each month with assigning all home teaching routes because many households that are in the directory simply to not show up in the LCR system. Those which do not show up in the system are generally newer move-ins. However, I am having trouble understanding how the list of households available to do home teaching assignments is not directly linked to the ward directory list.

As a work around, we end up writing in names by hand before issuing assignments, which makes keeping track of assignments very tricky, and leaves no means for us to report whether those people were home taught. I'm wondering if this is a universal problem experienced by others. Any insights would be helpful, thanks.

The problem may be the assignment of households to Elders Quorum vs High Priest Group. You may need to adjust the quorum/group assignment of each household before assigning the household to home teachers.
If the directory reports you're looking at are coming from MLS, then MLS membership data may be out-of-sync with LCR. If that is the case, then ask your ward clerk do a 'unit data refresh' in MLS.
DO NOT use ANY Home Teaching reports from MLS. The HT/VT data in MLS is NOT being synced with LCR.

There are two separate unassigned households lists – one for Elders Quorum (all households whose head of household is an Elder) and one for High Priests (all households whose head of household is not an elder – non-members fathers, single sisters, prospective elders, high priests). Depending on your calling you may only be able to see one list or the other. However, from the companionships screen you can assign any household to your companionships, whether or not they are in your unassigned household list.

From what we've been told, households that are on a mission won't appear in LCR. Even if they're serving their mission from home.
