Surplus Hard Copies of Manuals/Pamphlets/etc

#1

Post by mumfordj2 »

I'm a new ward clerk. The Bishop asked me to clean out all the cupboards - and I found a number of surplus manuals, pamphlets, etc that are available online or are older.

After keeping a representative few of each kind for us, what should I do with the remainder? I hate to throw them out if there are wards or branches in the world without them.

I still have a tremendous amount, for example -
-over 60 "A Word of Wisdom" pamphlets with Mark E. Peterson's talk (the orange ones)
-over 150 Duty to God sheets (sold in packs of 10, over 15 packs)
-10 each of Restoration of the Gospel and Plan of Salvation booklets for the lobby
-10 older Gospel Principles manuals (from 1997, although I don't think the content changed that much)
-over 60 of the maroon "Family Guidebooks"
-10 Gospel Teaching and Leadership manuals (the green ones)
-miscellaneous other items

I'm willing to mail these to a needy ward or branch. or do they just get mailed back to SLC?
Any suggestions?

I would suggest you check with the Stake and see if another Ward in your Stake could use any. Another option is to put them on a table in the foyer with a sign telling members they can take any/all they want for home use.

Family Guidebooks could be provided to each family by the Bishop during tithing settlement...

While i don't have the "official" info, I don't expect you can or should "mail them back to SLC."

Obviously, anything confidential (old church handbooks, outdated recommend books, etc) must be destroyed securely by your unit.

I think I would contact stake leaders (like the stake clerk) for direction, but I would imagine those items that still have worth could be offered to your ward/stake members as already suggested, and the remainder donated to Deseret Industries (if you have a local one) or recycled. Just my thoughts....

Thanks for the replies...I put out a lot on the lobby table that have been taken, also sent an email to entire ward membership. Gave relevant items to the emergency prep coordinator. I will contact Stake clerk next. But we do have a local desert industries, so that's where any left overs will go.
