Transferring Family Into Ward

#1

Post by Mxwade »

Hello,

I have transferred a head of household into the ward and now he shows up when I do a membership search. Under the household tab for the member, the correct family members are listed.

The problem that I encounter is that when I do a membership search for family members, they do not show up. Have the family members also been transferred into the ward? If not, how do I transfer the whole family into the ward.

Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

Make sure you're looking at the "household" and not at the genealogical ("Current spouse"/"Children") information. The latter can show information about people who are not in the ward, not members, or even no longer alive.

If you're looking in MLS, you might do a data refresh.

This sounds like just the head of household was moved in. When doing a "Request Records" it is possible you only checked the box next to the head of household in step 2 rather than every member of the household. If the entire household membership records are to be moved you can check the box next to "Name" for all the names in the household to be checked in one action rather than checking each name of each member of the household.

Not likely if you did not check each household member name in step 2 of the "Request Records" action.

The head of household membership record will include the names and membership record numbers of those household members who have a membership record. You can request those records just as you did for the head of household.

The spouse for the brother you requested is most likely the head of household in the previous ward now. With her name and MRN or birthday you can request the records for the remaining members of the household. Just make sure that in step 2 you make sure all the members of the household have the check box next to their name checked.

Another reason you may have only gotten the head of household is because the household was not combined into one household in the previous ward. I have found this to have happened when one of the spouses is called to an out-of-unit calling and the record of that spouse was sent to the unit in which they were serving rather than remaining in the home ward.

Regardless of the reason for only the head of household record being moved you can still get the remaining members with the information found in the brother's membership record.

If you look at the Members Moved In report, you can see which records have been moved into your ward. If a name is not listed on that list, the record was not moved into your ward.

Thank you scgallafent, the Members Moved In report is an excellent recommendation, I will give it a try.

jdlessley - You were 100 percent correct for everything that you told me, the spouse was now listed as the head of the household so I moved her into the ward along with the children. It worked perfectly so I tried another family and ran into another issue. For the second family, one of the children (age 2 or 3) is listed in the household, but no check-box appeared. I was able to move the spouse and older child in but there is no record for the youngest even though she is listed as a member of the family. I even searched for her separately in the membership section. Any ideas as to the cause of this and what I should do to correct?

Thanks,

Most likely the clerk in the ward they lived in previously neglected to create a membership record for that younger child. Perhaps she was not blessed, or perhaps she was, but the clerk didn't follow up and create the record. Since the child appears as a member of the family, it might be that that the clerk was confused and added a child to the parents' records, thinking that that would create a record (but it doesn't). You might want to check with the previous ward to be sure. If a record was created, then it will almost certainly still be in that previous ward. But it really sounds like you did everything correctly and there really is no membership record.

Once you verify that there is no existing record, you can use MLS to create a new Child of Record membership record for this child (that function is not yet available in LCR). That's an option anytime until the child turns 8.

Your guess is the same as mine, but if LCR is showing people based on the parent's records instead of actual records, this sounds like a new problem in the making - children who are living apart suddenly getting yanked out of the ward because their parents moved. I hope that's not the case.

I'd sure like to see an explanation of where the names and checkboxes come from.

My suggestion for the timing being is to request the records you can. (Making sure they really are a part of the household that's now in your ward.) Once they come in, see if you can request the child's record individually. If you can't, then it's time to create them (following the rules in Handbook 1).

They come from households. If I had a household with parents and several children and another household with the parents' adult daughter, attempting to move someone in the family would prompt with the names of the entire family without the adult daughter. Attempting to move the adult daughter would only prompt with her name.

OK, but why does Post #6 reference a name with no checkbox? What's going on there? Does it indicate a child without a record? (And therefore not part of any household?)
