We have a mission leader who is definitely there in MLS when you look at ward leadership positions. But he is unable to make new appointments on the missionary calendar, so something must be wrong. This should be automatic, correct?

Does he have a standard calling? Has one of the ward administrators added his standard calling as an editor of the ward missionary calendar?
Or are you talking about a stake missionary calendar?

It is not automatic. Nor are there automatically ANY calendars. The only thing automatic in the calendar system is the Default Admin of the Ward Bishopric and Stake Presidency and clerks. Depending on if this is a ward or stake calendar, you'll need to get with the ward or stake clerk/executive secretary.
