Tithing statement for new ward member's previous contributio

#1

Post by mhomer »

Is it possible to print a tithing / donor statement for a member of a ward's donations that were made in a previous ward? Our ward experiences frequent transitions and a number of people moved into the ward in the middle of the year and the donor statements for their current ward don't reflect donations made in their previous ward during the same year. Is there any way to obtain this information in their current ward?

I believe it's done automatically at the end of the year for the year-end tax statement. But I don't think you can do it on demand.

Donor records at the unit level only reflect donations made to that unit. Donor records do not follow the member to their new unit. For this reason Church headquarters provides donation statements at two times to the current unit in which a member resides.

The first is a donor statement in November that reflects donations for members making donations to more than one unit in the year. The caveat is that the donations were made in a unit that had the donor's membership record when the donation was made or that the MRN was provided at the time the donation was processed. This donor record is for tithing settlement purposes and may not be complete because there is a cutoff date for those donations and all donations after that date will not be available on the statement.

The second statement is a tax valid statement sent in January to the unit in which the member's record resides. It has a December 31st cutoff date for donations recorded at headquarters. Any donations received after the cutoff but recorded for the previous year will not be included in that statement.

If there are any discrepancies, such as missing donations, then the member must reconcile those discrepancies with the unit in which the donation was made. For this reason members should get a donor statement from the unit before moving to ensure all donations are accurately recorded. Waiting until they get the tax valid statement only complicates the process of getting the donation record corrected and a tax statement with all contributions correctly stated provided in time to file tax returns.

In addition to the records for local donations mentioned previously, there is an additional statement that is available. Each year in January a statement is sent to MLS for each member who donated to more than one unit during the previous year. This tax-valid statement is available in the Finance Statements area of MLS (the data is not part of the normal donation statements generated by MLS). This statement contains all donations made by the member and should be very helpful for members who moved in during the year.

Does Salt Lake have plans to email tax valid statements to all members (in the USA)? Obviously not for 2014 but is this on the roadmap for future years?

SLC has:
  • our email addresses (for those that have registered them)
a history of contributions at our local unit
records of any contributions made direct to SLC
My ward had several hundred tax statements to print out, sign and distribute. Many of these are for people that have moved out.

For members that have moved, their records have moved with them and we no longer have their address even if we wanted to mail these all out.

And the tax form doesn't print with an address on it, let alone in a format that it could easily be folded and placed in an envelope with a "window" for the address to show.

Just seems like there could be a 2015 solution to this issue.

At this point, the plan looks to be to have the member's current ward hand it to the member. That's how it's worked for the past couple of years. The only issue I see is that the old wards don't have a way to know they're off the hook.

It might be worth re-examining the instructions to determine how much effort a ward needs to expend for members who have moved out.

Based on the help file at https://www.lds.org/help/support/financ ... s?lang=eng it looks like there are plans to make donation history and tax statements available online. We have no clue as to when this will actually be available (it seems likely that it will be rolled out incrementally) but that's probably at least part of the long term plan.

This has been a source of great frustration for me. I often get requests from former ward members for a tax valid statement. I tell them their current ward has the statements and even tell them where to find them and the name of the file so they can pass that on to the finance clerk. Most of the time, the clerk tells them it is not available and will not look in the finance statements to find it. Despite the fact that they have been sent for at least the last two years, and there has been multiple emails talking about them, these clerks aren't aware of them and don't believe me when I tell them.

It's a little scary that some wards are getting at least two finance statements every year that they aren't opening to find out what they say.
