Associating a donation with the previous calendar year

#1

Post by stlewis1 »

I have a member of our ward that paid the entirety of their tithing at the end of Dec. 2014. Their particular donation wasn't processed until the first Sunday of January of 2015. Is there a way to associate that donation with the previous calendar year so that they have recorded donations for 2014 and can have a corresponding donation sheet for their taxes?

The answer is in prior year donations.

Note the requirements: Either the donation was received in 2014 or it was postmarked 2014. That's a matter of tax law and supersedes bishop's authority.

In other words, it DOES NOT MATTER when they "wrote the check." If it was mailed and postmarked in 2014, it was a 2014 donation. If it was handed to the church's representative (Bishopric member) in 2014, it was a 2014 donation. Otherwise, it is a 2015 donation.

One year my ward announced that due to a number of members traveling over the holidays, current year donations needed to get in a week before the end of the year. They were soon advised. <grin>

(I consider it acceptable to ask, but not to require.)

Of course, in that situation, the members would be welcome to mail their donations to the bishop, getting them postmarked before year's end. The donations could be processed anytime in January and still be fine from a tax perspective (but the new January 15 deadline for the Tithing Declaration report would probably be the limiting factor).
