Prospective Elders showing up on multiple rolls

#1

Post by zergbig »

Starting this year I've started seeing what seems to be a problem when I print attendance rolls for the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthood quorum , specifically when it comes to Prospective Elders. The issue is that Prospective Elders are showing up on the Aaronic priesthood rolls as well as on the High Priest rolls. For example, we have a brother that is age 33 who has been ordained to the office of Priest. It has been many years since he has attended church. When I print the Priest quorum attendance roll he shows up. This same brother shows up again when I print the High Priest group roll. Is this to be expected? If not, is there something I can do to fix this problem? Or is this a bug in MLS that needs to be fixed?

One interesting note is that if I print the Priest quorum roll from lds.org I only get the Priest age boys on the roll, which is what I'd expect.

This is a known issue that will be addressed with an MLS update. I don't remember if it went into MLS 3.8.0 (Real Soon Now) or MLS 3.8.1 (A Little Less Soon But Still Real Soon), but it has been fixed.

We noticed the same problem in our ward (and I started another thread, without knowing about this one).

I advised our YM president to use the functions on lds.org to get an accurate list of who is in each of his quorums. When he did so, he told me that it was not helpful because it only showed him the boys who were ordained to the appropriate level for their age. So, and inactive 17-year-old who is still a deacon was not showing up on the priest list (but maybe was showing up on the deacon list?). Anyone have a similar issue?

I just verified with my ward that a less-active 17-year-old who is still a deacon shows up on the priest list. Check the class assignments in MLS.

I have the problem of prospective elders (either newly baptized or less active - non Young mens quorum) are on the elder quorum attendance list. When the class attendance is taken the prospective elders are being counted as "Melchizdek priesthood holders attending priesthood or primary meetings" but there is a separate column in the quarterly report.
To save time, confusion and to make sure numbers are more accurate should there be a separate "Prospective Elders" Attendance list or something so they are not counted twice (inflated numbers).

I disagree. Prospective elders who do attend quorum meetings should be made to feel part of the quorum to fellowship them and make them comfortable attending. Since most quorums pass the roll around for each person to mark themselves, having a separate list just marks these men as apart. There certainly should be much more to fellowshipping than having just one attendance list but I consider it well worth the time of a secretary or clerk (and I've been both) to filter the attendance roll and separate out these numbers for the quarterly report.

The ward clerk can print a list of prospective elders and give it to the Elder's quorum and HP group secretaries to help in this process.
