How to Chnage Member Last Name in MLS

We have a member was registered with a different spelling of her Last Name by the Missionary when she was baptized, and then when she applied for her Passport, she used a different spelling for her Last Name ( For Example : Zhou / Chou ) spell the same.

Look like we have to use the one she used for her Passport or not she won't be able to get her Tax Receipt correct with the same name. But, we were unable to change her Last Name in MLS since it already got her Membership No. locked. We tried, just won't let us made any changes.

What is the correct way of doing this ?

Is the member still in your ward? If so, then that should be fixable on the membership side.

Me and the Ward Clerk have tried to change but Last Name was not able to change and may be because it's link to the membership No.. For the time being, we could only merge both names together as one. Thanks

One of those will link back to the membership - and it's likely to revert to whatever the membership records shows.

Where are you trying to change the member's name? Are you actually trying to change the name on the membership record, or are you trying to change the name on the donor record in the finances section?

We tried both on the Membership and on the Donor record, both failed to do so, actually the field is not highlighted for changes. (Mean you can't even type anything on that field)

I'm not sure why you're having problems with changing the membership record, but since the church policy is that the full name needs to match the member's legal name, it should be changed. The preferred name and household name can be different (but that would likely cause confusion.)

That's because in their home country where "English" is not the official language, so their official name usually written in their local language (For example : In Chinese Character) then to pronounce their name in "Mandarin" and in "Cantonese", the spelling will not be the same. In this case, her two Last Name are "Zhou" and "Chou" where our Missionary used the "Zhou" for her in membership registration and she used the "Chou" when she applied for her passport. Of course, our record should match her official record, somehow we just couldn't change a person "Last Name" in the membership record in MLS.

I can understand that on the finance side, but you should be able to do that on the membership side. You may be overlooking a "edit" link. I think it's in the upper right, in blue, when you pull up her individual record.

Note that the MLS login you are using would have to have membership edit rights to do that. Maybe that's what's missing. If you only have finance rights, that would explain it.
