MRN for member's non-member daughter

#1

Post by hawescm1 »

My bishop has requested me to figure out how to assign an MRN or equivalent for a young woman who is the daughter of a ward member (less active), but she is not yet a member. Bishop needs this so we can set up a seminary account for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Church headquarters assigns an MRN when a membership record is created. I would call your Seminary and Institute coordinator and ask him how to register a non-member student.

An MRN can only get assigned by creating a membership record. And membership records can only be created by baptism or for children of members who are 8 years old or less. Since the daughter is obviously over 8, there is no way to assign an MRN unless she gets baptized.

However, the User Guide for the seminary online registration site indicates that a paper based registration can be used in some circumstances and it provides a link to the form that should be used. That may be the best way to handle this situation.

The bishop may also be trying to figure out other things with his request to you, and not just how to enroll in seminary. We all know of "active" children or youth, not yet baptized, but over the age of 9, and without a membership record. These children or youth might be just as active as every other child in your primary or youth classes, but for various reasons, baptism may not be an option, yet. These children/youth names don't show in the usual places, so "out-of-sight" is truly "out-of-mind" for the bishop and ward council leaders and teachers who could be watching over them and leading them toward baptism.

Seminary is just one area that not having a MRN may effect. These children or youth COULD be added locally into your ward MLS system, as a "non-member," (a temporary record held only in your ward.) Doing so could solve some of the issues, such as allowing them to show up on class rolls, be called in MLS to some positions, show in directories printed in MLS (not LDS.org,) etc. Of course, consult your leaders and the parents!
