temple construction webcam

I'm kind of interested in setting up a webcam to show the construction progress on a temple slated to be built in our area. Would the Church be OK with that? I've messed with the little ones that sit on a desktop, but nothing higher end that would be out in the weather. . .

I cannot speak for the Church, but I have seen webcams for the Nauvoo Illinois, San Bernardino California, Rexburg Idaho, and Twin Falls Idaho Temples. Most updated every 30 seconds but could be set (with the browser) for longer update times. The Nauvoo Temple included an archive feature where you could go back and look at stored images in one-minute intervals from the time of groundbreaking until dedication.

The Nauvoo site was hosted by Deseret Book. The Rexburg site was hosted by BYU-Idaho. I believe the others were done privately.

It was (and is) a delight to see them go up.

I am not a lawyer, but I believe that anyone with the resources would be free to set up a webcam if they had the permission of the camera location owner. Countries and some local jurisdictions do have different privacy rules, so I would be careful there. And as a member, I would certainly want to be sure that the site was of good quality.

The Twin Falls Idaho site is active. You might be able to check with that site owner and the San Bernardino site to see how they were able to work out the details.

Thank you, that's very helpful. I find it interesting that the Twin Falls webcam (and entire site) is an official site of the Church.

It looks like webcams are very doable, with a huge range of features, resolutions, and prices.

There is a private web site for all the temples, and they accept uploaded photos of temples under construction, there seems to be a lot of people sending in photos and you can watch the progress there. The web site was started by a returned missionary at BYU as a class project and he has kept it up and it is a real well maintained site. ldstemples.com

I did not realize that. The San Bernardino site was similar in design.

Did the temple committee request that the Church put up the site for them? I wonder if other temples under construction could also request that.

I don't know. There are about 10 temples under construction, but Twin Falls is the only one that I know of that has an official "stand-alone" site (separate from the lds.org pages).
