Your Stake Technology Specialist is the one responsible for the computers. He is an Assistant Stake Clerk--Technology. If he is not able to take care of things, you might discuss it with the stake clerk or one of your priesthood leaders.

However, since you appear to have some extended knowledge relating to computers, your leaders may wish to consider a calling for you to assist the Asst Stk Clerk--Technology. He will know the proper policy and procedures to follow in maintaining Church administrative and FHC computers, but I imagine that he would welcome some computer expertise if he is at all unsure about those technical matters.

And as long as you are willing to follow Church policy and procedures, I would think a valuable relationship would develop there. I suggest that you speak with your priesthood leaders about the situation and, if you are so inspired, to offer your willingness to assist. Then allow them to make the decision and the proper assignments or calling as they are inspired.

It does require some effort to keep computers properly maintained. For a Family History Center (and for clerk computers), the stake technology specialist has that responsibility.

The approved antivirus solution is Sophos, and if it is properly installed, it will automatically update itself to protect against new or updated viruses.

Another tool available in FHCs is called Deep Freeze, and it helps protect the computers against configuration changes that patrons might make. It requires some effort to install, but is quite helpful after that.

It's nice of you to secretly fix the computers, but it seems to me that it would be much better to coordinate this with the stake technology specialist. For the FHC, it would also be good to make the FHC director aware of the issues. Perhaps they could formalize an assignment for you to help with computer maintenance, since you are willing and have the skills.

We aware that if the computer has Deep Freeze installed, all that will be undone on the next reboot. (As well as any viruses that might have gotten in.) The computer has to be "thawed" and then the updates applied.

This might explain both why it's so far behind and why the STS doesn't think it's a problem. He may be viewing it from a functionally standpoint. So you might need to approach it from the standpoint of what being out of date is preventing you from doing.
