Personal Progress app?

#1

Post by geekiemommie »

The girls in our ward are using Personal Progress and they love it, but they would really LOVE an iOS and Android app :) I know coding is NOT easy, but they sure would love it.

Is this planned at all?

Not that I know of, but then they rarely give us a sneak preview.

I'm looking for projects and I would love to create something like this.

Could you send me an email with more information about what you'd like it to include? happyliving[at]live[dot]com

Also, are there any other apps like it on the app store? I couldn't find any unofficial apps for it.

I looked up what is currently online here: https://www.lds.org/young-women/personal-progress

When I'm logged in, there's quite a bit there for tracking progress. Turning that into app would certainly be possible, though I don't know if mirroring the website is really what the girls want.

Let me know!

Note that the website allows the leaders to monitor the progress. I'm not sure how that could be duplicated in a 3rd-party app. Maybe if the app was a front-end or could sync to the website. But I'm not sure as that would be allowed.

I'm sure only an official app would be given permissions to sync to the website. That'd be rather redundant though as most smart phones can access the internet directly. A simpler solution would be a version of the website optimized for mobile devices.

I think I would be much more interested in creating an app that is different (i.e. not a mirror image of the website). It's difficult to journal on a mobile device when a keyboard or pen and paper are much better for that.

However, being able to pull up the Values and see what the next step is might be very handy. For example, "Discover the principles of faith taught by the mothers of Helaman’s stripling warriors. Read Alma 56:45–48 and 57:21." Then with a single tap, pull up that scripture and read it.

Or with this one "What are some of the divine qualities of a daughter of God? Read 'The Family: A Proclamation to the World'; 2 Peter 1; Alma 7:23–24; and Doctrine and Covenants 121:45." A mobile app could allow a girl to check off each one as she reads it, and thus remember where she's at and which ones still need to be read later.

The idea is not to rush the process or cut out the need to go home and write a thoughtful journal. Only to get them started and give them something to think about when they find themselves waiting at school, in the car, in a long line, etc. I'm sure most girls don't take their printed materials with them everywhere. It's unlikely my daughter would remember to look up "2 Peter 1" on her digital scriptures, if she had read the others but couldn't find her booklet after school one day. (Not being able to find her booklet is a very common problem.)

I suppose the best bet would be to simply make a demo app, then ask the girls in my local ward would they would add and what they liked. 3rd party apps have a great deal of flexibility, as long they remain relevant and helpful.

Yes, this is definitely not a third-party app thing! It needs to an official LDS one, especially since girls keep their journals in it.

Many girls have requested an app, but we tell them they'll have to do it online for now. Some girls still prefer the book, but we still make them mark it online that it's complete.
