We have a brother who came to us with a Birth Certificate from a child (son) born in 1939. His concern is that on is IOS print off from MLS this child doesn’t appear. We are uncertain if we can or even need to have that information added to his record, but he feels that it should be there. Can anyone advise us of what we can or cannot do?

You certainly can add a child to an individual record in MLS. If the child is a member of the Church, you should try to obtain the child's record number and confirmation date, as these pieces of information will be requested when you add the child. If the child is not a member, then only the name and birthdate is required (which you obviously have if you have been given a birth certificate).

The membership record is intended to list all the children, whether or not they became members of the Church. So it seems entirely proper to respond to your ward member's request.

Adult child on membership record

To add the child, you will need the birth date. It will help if you also have the child's confirmation date if the child is old enough to have been baptized and confirmed. On the Membership Records panel, click "Individual Record." Choose the parent from the list. On the left side of the Member Record screen that comes up, click "Children." Then click "Add Child." Fill out the information in the window that appears and save it. Fairly simple.
