General Conference Broadcast in Multiple Languages

#1

Post by ksteurer »

I have read in the forums that it may be possible to receive the general conference broadcast thru the church satellite system at our stake center in multiple languages, but there is "special equipment" needed. Does anyone know what this equipment is and how to verify if we have it at our building? We have interest in having the broadcast in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.

Thanks in advance for the help

Depending on the needs, it may require additional satellite receivers as well as additional modulators.

The standard satellite receiver will work for that combination. But you'll need modulators for each of those languages. The basic setup usually has two - one for English and one for a Chapel feed. (Most TVs won't find that channel unless a camera or other video source is plugged into the jack at the back of the chapel.) For what you want, you'd need 4 units. You can also plug in a TV set and scan through the channels 2-13 and see what you find. Is there satellite programming on more than one channel?

Thanks for the information. I was able to look in the stake center media library at our equipment. From the main satellite receiver, the signal goes to two modulators. The first one is labeled Channel 3 and is labeled "English". The second one is labeled "Channel 6" and is labeled "Spanish". As such, any TV plugged into the coaxial system in the church can be tuned to these channels and pick up either English or Spanish. We do not have a third modulator, so Chinese is not available directly thru the satellite.

Here is our work-around for Chinese translation:
We have a head-set translation set in our stake center for live translation of meetings. We will take a laptop, and stream the Chinese audio from the internet during each conference session, and run the audio from the laptop to the translation equipment using an 1/8" audio cable, with a plug at each end. We can use the translation set to send the Chinese audio to the headsets and anyone wanting Chinese audio can wear a headset and sit with those watching in English in the chapel.

I hope it all works and that our internet signal holds up. It sounds like additional modulators can be purchased through the FM group in our stake, but they would not be available in time for conference.

Why not just hook the laptop up to a TV and set it up in a different room.

The problem is the timing of the Internet stream is likely to be way off from the satellite stream. At least by several seconds.

But if the desire is just to get sound, there's a simpler way. Your satellite receiver should have a "Audio 2" output. Give the Satellite Support people a call, and they should be able to hook you up with Mandarin. (I'm assuming you're the Stake Technology Specialist. They'll probably want to confirm that you're authorized to make this change.) They'll need your property number and/or the Serial Number of the receiver. They'll tell you if it will be on the left or right jack. Then get that signal to your headset transmitter and you're all set.

The video is common to all languages (except ASL). So your Chinese members will have the same experience as if they were watching "their" channel.

That would work, but it can be an isolating experience.

Lets see your sitting in a dark room watching a transmission on the big screen with a language you don't understand very well. So the solution is to put a head phone on you so you can hear in your own language, and that's not isolating. Its much better to just have the language set up in another room where you don't have to wear a head phone.

Unless it's a large group, I'd think four walls are far more isolating than a headset.

There is a satellite receiver model that can receive several languages at once. We have 5 languages at our stake center. We used to have one unit that received all languages. That unit died and they replaced it with the basic 2-language receiver (eliminating languages). Later they added a second receiver so we could get the additional languages. I miss the old all-in-one receiver.

Languages come in "pairs". (The stereo signal is split with the left and right channel having a separate language.) You can't independently select the languages - only the pairs that they come in.

We used to have a receiver that could do two auxiliary audio channels (6 languages total if everything lined up right). That one died and the replacement only had one auxiliary output. (4 languages max).

But back in the analog era, we had a add-on to the basic receiver that could select 4 independent audio channels.
