501c3 Copy
Aloha,
My company awarded my boy scout troop some money for a grant I applied for. They need a copy of a 501c3 of the church since my ward is chartered organization for my troop. If I can't supply a copy of this, our young men will be missing out on this grant that has been awarded to them. We have our summer camp next week and our troop is hurting for new tents. I've tried calling the church but they are unable to provide this document. Can anyone help us?
Thank you,
Earl Miyamoto

Re: 501c3 Copy
Did you contact the Church through any of the following?
Tax Administration
50 East North Temple Street, Room 2223
Salt Lake City, UT 84150-3620
Telephone: 1-801-240-3003 or 1-800-453-3860, extension 2-3003
Sometimes the only thing needed is the FIN for the Church which is 23-7300405 for U.S. units.

Re: 501c3 Copy
Thank you for both replies. I've gone to the IRS list of Exempt Organizations and sent the Accounts Payable of my company a screen shot of the church's status but they need the actual documentation. I sent them that exact link you posted. I've also contacted the Tax Administration of the church as you listed but they were unable to provide me with the 501c3 due to new regulations of some sort. Something to do with companies matching donations and in turn benefiting the employee... They will not just accept the EIN number unfortunately... I remember a while back seeing a copy of the church's 501c3 on Google images but can't find it anymore... I'm sure a screen shot of the form would be sufficient documentation for my company.

If you need an actual copy and cannot get it from the Church, try requesting it using IRS Form 4506-A. Check it out at the irs.gov site. I don't know how fast you can get it, though.

If I am not mistaken, each stake has its own unique number, at least ours does.jdlessley wrote:Sometimes the only thing needed is the FIN for the Church which is 23-7300405 for U.S. units.

Many have an EIN, but not a 501c3 filing. The poster says his employer will not accept the EIN.mlh78 wrote:If I am not mistaken, each stake has its own unique number, at least ours does.

Re: 501c3 Copy
A church is not required to apply for recognition as a 501(c)(3) - they qualify without application (subject to the IRS later coming in and disputing that they are actually a church). The church itself does not have an IRS letter of the type you are seeking (but it does have a 2003 letter from the IRS explaining that it doesn't need to apply for recognition). The Corporation of the Presiding Bishopric, on the other hand, has a 501(c)(3) letter that was issued in 2010. I don't know why it has one; perhaps because of the church's various investments and business interests.

Re: 501c3 Copy
Please see the attached letter that I have used in the past.
I am not sure how current it is as it references a 2005 update to section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code, but the explanation of how the church is accepted as a bona-fide tax exempt organization and the listing in the Cumulative List of Organizations may be useful.-
