Household recording/organization

Post by jodelasur »

What's the standard way to group people into a household? These are the rules I follow so far.

1. People living in the same residence belong to one household.
2. If two families live in the same residence, they are recorded as two separate households.
3. If a home teaching assignment is directed to a single member, the member is recorded in a separate household, even though he still lives in the same residence with his family, so as to validate recording in MLS.

My problem is with the third rule. Seeing single members show up as separate households in the directory doesn't feel right for me. But we need them separate because of the HT assignments; our EQ leaders feel that having separate Home Teachers for some YSAs are more effective than having just one HT companionship for the whole family.

If you were handling our records, would you follow the same rules? If not, how would you record them?

I definitely agree with your rules. Having separate home teachers for a YSA can be very helpful. Besides, once someone is an adult, it seems perfectly acceptable (better, in most cases) to have them listed as a separate household on the ward directory.

I think you'll find that on the issue of YSA living at home, it's a "bishop's prerogative" as to how they are handled.

Some wards have reported that once a single person leaves home, they are considered a separate household should they return. But singles who have never left home are left in the family - at least initially. I'd imagine that they get separated at some point. Having a 30-year old listed as a "child" in the parent's household doesn't feel right to me.
