Accessibility problems with Lesson Schedules pages

#1

Post by briancragun »

There are serious limitations in the Lesson Schedules feature of http://www.lds.org, which make it impossible to use by individuals with disabilities who are blind or mobility limited and cannot use a mouse. The interactive widgets on the screen cannot be operated with a keyboard. They are not perceivable to a screen reader. They do not appear in the navigation ring.

The following widgets on the main Lesson Schedules fail keyboard interaction:
1. Forward arrow
2. Backward arrow
3. Checkboxes
The checkboxes further fail because they do not announce status to a screen reader as to whether they are checked or not.

The following widgets on the Lesson Schedules / Administration dialog fail keyboard interaction:
1. Delete button
2. Checkboxes
The checkboxes further fail because they do not announce status to a screen reader as to whether they are checked or not.

The following widgets on the Lesson Schedules / Administration / Add Class (or Edit Class) dialog have errors:
1. The Instructor text entry field is not labeled. This is important, but the failure of other widgets to work with the keyboard is much more serious.

The following widgets on the Lesson Schedules / New Event dialog have errors:
1. The calendar graphic does not have alternative text, nor is the role as a button listed.
2. The Event Name text entry field is not labeled.
3. Checkboxes. Not reachable with keyboard. Fail to announce as checkboxes. Do not announce state.
4. The calendar widget forward and backward buttons cannot be reached with the keyboard.

I used JAWS 13.0.1006 on both IE 9 and Firefox 17.0.4

Please add these navigation errors to your error list as a high priority for fixing.

The approved method to report problems is to use the LDS.org home page feedback link. This link is also on many other, but not all, LDS.org pages. We can discuss it in the forum, but we cannot be certain the right church employee is going to see this thread or even hear about it even though there are church employees who visit from time to time. The LDS.org tools forums have church employees frequenting and posting, but there is no guarantee when, or if, the thread information will get to the right people.

Hi,

Thanks for the information.

Just for the record, that's not how the instructions read. On the Lesson Schedule page, there is no feedback link. There is a help button for Lesson Schedules. If you select that, on the main help page, there is a link for Getting Help. It says, "For help with the calendar, you can use the LDSTech Forum to ask questions, raise concerns, or look for information. To access the forum, click the LDSTech Lesson Schedules Forum link in the lower-right corner of any page of the online help. ... When you post to the forum, be specific about your question. If you're seeing an error, note the error and explain what you did to produce the error. "

That is what I did. If we are not supposed to post errors, here, then perhaps we need to change the instructions?

The information you quoted is correct. Note the help page directs users to the forum to "ask questions, raise concerns, or look for information". The nature of the issue you are reporting is beyond the capability of the user-to-user support found in this forum. The issues reported will require programming changes. As such the feedback link on the LDS.org home page has the best chance of getting the feedback to the people with authority, and ability, to do something about it.
