Engineering forum?

Post by moberle »

Is there a forum here for network instructure standardization? I suppose it would apply more to meetinghouse networks than data center or headquarters.

It seems like a working body (IETF style) to distill requirements into standard implementations is needed given the wide array of stuff being plugged into meetinghouse networks.

I am sure the Church has people who do this internally but it would seem prudent to leverage the experience and expertise of people who are not directly employed by the Church.

Some of us have been working in large enterprises, data centers, and carrier class enviroments for many years.

We can help. :-)

Meetinghouse Internet is close enough. However the proposed gathering of members is pointless unless there is someone willing to accept input. That has to be established first.

I don't know that Meetinghouse Internet is structured enough to serve the purpose but it is worth a try. At a minimum it would need a group of people who were willing to do more than passively complain or passively collect info from popular threads.

I think the issue of a designated point of contact is readily solved.

Mike,

I believe there is some movement around calling Area Technology Specialists - That position might be a great starting point to something akin to a 'Customer advisory board' like we're used to in enterprise environments.

It has just been my experience that the Central Office isn't interested in ideas from the outside. This was one of the major downfalls of the community development efforts that quickly lost momentum - quality individuals wanted to contribute to the direction of the development of the apps, but quickly found out that all they were really doing was acting as code monkeys.

I'd rather we find a way to address issues that exist between IT/FM and the extremely inconsistent results being produced for stakes around the country. Many of us don't have wireless for the meetinghouse, we don't have Ethernet in key locations - our equipment is outdated.. The reason we had to backpedal so much and start telling people to download to present is due to many of these issues that were only exposed to 'The Brethren' after the direction to move forward with the curriculum was completed.

It isn't hard to see that the parallels between the curriculum development for our youth and the meetinghouse internet project.
