Install MLS at home?

#1

Post by ba1306 »

I am a Ward Clerk, and I have an Elders Quorum President who would like to install MLS at home. Is this appropriate, and/or possible?

There can only be one installation of MLS with live data per ward, and that is on the unit's computer.

It is possible to install MLS on a personal computer with test data, for training purposes, but I'm guessing that's not what the goal of your question is.

Note that installing MLS with live data on personal computers is prohibited by policy.

It seems to me we don't have the real request. It is a big leap to ask for MLS at your home. What is this person trying to do? Is it inconvenient to update ht at the church? Does he want to pull data when he needs it rather than plan for and request it ahead of time, etc...

You might find there is a fundamental breakdown in what he wants and what the clerks are doing for him, etc...

I am guessing that the EQ president would like to have the same information available to him at home without having to go to the ward administrative computer to get it. In addition to the policy issues already pointed out there are the technical issues that cannot be overcome. These technical limitations support the enforcement of the policies already stated.

The first technical issue is that there can only be one MLS database for each unit. There is no capability to synchronize multiple installations of a unit MLS database.

Secondly, only one computer may communicate with headquarters. This is enforced by a security measure in which the computer attempting to communicate with headquarters must provide the proper security response. If it cannot, then all communications are terminated.

Finally, with MLS version 3.5 and later there is an additional requirement when MLS starts to ensure a file is present that matches the a setting in the database. If the file is not present or does not match the information in the database then the financial sections of MLS are locked. This is to ensure financial data on MLS is in synchronization with CUBS data. When the file and database information do not match then a send/receive is required to synchronize the financial data. This hinders the ability to restore a backup from the single authorized installation of MLS to another computer and have financial sections access from that restored backup. Of course, as noted previously, only one computer can communicate with headquarters.

Hopefully the information provided above will discourage any schemes or attempts to install live data on any computer other than the single authorized unit administrative computer. Any desires to have MLS data available at home or away from the unit administrative computer will have to wait for the online tools on LDS.org for the appropriate calling positions. Currently membership data is available to limited leadership calling positions. Further development is in the queue for auxiliary leaders. When that will be completed and released has not been announced. But we do know they are working on it.

Now lds.tool can helps to find the limited information in android or online, leaders who want to use at home can refer to that and make use of it, this is appropriate than viewing finance and other personal information in personal computer where other members of the family can see it.

I am assuming you are asking a question. When using LDS Tools or Leader and Clerk Resources the leader should keep the information private and not share log-in credentials with family members. The display of information should be handled in the same manner as in the ward meetinghouse. If you cannot find a private location to view the data then do not view the data until you can do so without others also viewing the data.
