Webcast panic

#1

Post by dustinaleksiuk »

Hi all,

I'm writing this hoping that someone might be monitoring the forum that could help me. We have stake conference tomorrow, and webcasting isn't working. Webcasting is generally routine for us and we tested it on Tuesday evening and last night and everything worked great. We tested last night for a few hours with no hiccups.

The problem is on the receiving side, windows pops up an error saying "unable to open file". The sending side seems to be fine. Everything looks good.

I called the help line hoping that they might be around because of another broadcast, but after an hour and 15 minutes on hold I hung up.

We're using the webcast communicator. I tried various video inputs to be sure. I tried 2 different internet providers. I rebooted it. I tried different quality levels.

I have a feeling the issue is actually on the church's side, since our tests Tuesday and last night worked flawlessly.

Any ideas would be great. I have around 450 people expecting this broadcast tomorrow. If I can't get this working soon I'm going to look at alternatives, like sending my video to skype or some other service.

Thanks,
Dustin

Update: we're up and running.

WIth my testing earlier today, I couldn't kill the network because the stake presidency and our visiting general authority were using it. I guess i just didn't have enough upstream bandwidth. I didn't expect it to behave that way, but I guess there's probably an absolute minimum it needs.

Or maybe that's just a coincidence, but I'm relieved now.

Regards,
Dustin

We have the remote site use the test webcast streams to verify their environment

http://stream.lds.org/webcast or http://stream.lds.org/webcast

-----------------------------------------
Updated: 15Jan2013

Webcast Receiving Device Testing:
You can view the webcast from any networked device, if it will play the following test stream
Desktop/Laptop with Microsoft XP, Vista, Win 7, or Win 8

Please play the test stream on your desktop/laptop/tablet/smart device Click here to view the test LDS Webcast stream or copy and paste the link into a browser or application: http://stream.lds.org/webcast (you can test almost anytime)

Notes:
1) "Broadcast (webcast) is an extension of the meeting and all rules apply at remote sites"
2) Technical webcast issues:
A) stop and restart the webcast, (e.g., close the Microsoft Windows Media Player) and then click on the link provided above; you may have to wait at least two (2) minutes for the webcast and/or audio to start
B) contact your local Stake Technology Specialist, or the person who provides technical support to you
C) contact LDS IT Support Services Staff: 866-678-2763, limited support is available from Saturday night (EDT) until Sunday 14:00 hours (2 p.m., EDT)

Webcast Test Stream Server

#4

Post by pete.arnett »

The Microsoft Windows Media Server at headquarters that is used to provide the webcast test stream will be back online early in Nov2013
http://stream.lds.org/webcast or http://webcast.lds.org/webcast

Stream codec uses - "The WMV3 video codec is used for the test stream and the webcast software uses WVC1 video codec" provided by a STS in North Florida

-----------------------------------------------
28Oct2013

"Brethren,
I appreciate your questions regarding the Windows Media test loops…. With the decommission of the Windows Media Encoders, the test loops were lost so they need to be re-transcoded and placed on another server, which we are in the process of doing right now. It will be a day or two before this process is complete and the URL’s redirected. Sorry for the mishap. The people who took out these outdated encoders were not aware that other processes and files were being hosted on these servers. ..."

I had a similar issue, testing worked fine on receiving end. wmp was used and stream opened.

then on Stake conf day, wmp said could not open file, missing codec.(more or less the error)

Same laptop/config everything.

I told them to use vlc, and got it working.
