Missing Data from Membership Directory report on LDS.org

#1

Post by tlunt373 »

Preparing to generate printed ward directory for ward members. Preferred to do this via LDS.org but when directory of members was printed, several (about 5%) did not show their address/contact information. I verified the information was there. I also went to MLS and printed the same report and it did show all information. Any ideas why the member directory report through LDS.org would omit contact information for a good number of members but when printed from MLS everything is fine? For 2013, we'll use the MLS-printed directory, unless there is a quick resolution for this.

The directory on LDS.org displays information as constrained by the privacy settings each member has specified. My guess is that the 5% of the people you're noticing with less data are either households who have completely hidden their households by setting their privacy setting to "Private - Leadership only" or have set some pieces of data within their profile with that privacy level.

If that theory is correct, there's a very strong argument that you should definitely NOT do what you are proposing. Using the MLS report has no respect for the privacy settings, since those settings don't get transmitted to MLS from the Directory. But if people have set their privacy settings, you really should respect those settings on anything you publish to the general ward membership (of course leaders are entitled to see the entire unfiltered list).

Another possibility is that MLS for some reports will use what is called "Contact" information, which means "use the individual contact info if available, and the household contact info otherwise." I suppose it's possible that some of the extra information you're seeing in MLS is explained by that difference, but it doesn't sound like it.
