Producing dlists from Directory

#1

Post by gpford5 »

I am the director of our family history center. It would be nice to be able to produce a dlist for Family History Consultants and High Priest Group Leaders rather than have to manually look them up in the Directory. Any likelihood of this in the near future...or ever?

What is a dlist, if I may be so ignorantly bold to ask?

It's a Distribution List, which some email programs simply call a "group".

Since the Directory uses your email program to send emails, it's a simple matter to copy any set of addresses that is generated when you use the Directory's send email feature. With most email programs, you can then save that list of addresses in a group or distribution list.

Of course, such a distribution list is static -- it won't change as people change callings or organizations, but it would provide the basic functionality desired.

Sorry...dlist is a distribution list. If the system produced a distribution list of all consultants, then you could use the addresses to send them email that applied to them.

Thank you for the response. That's basically what I do now...hunt down the email, create a text list and use that. But, like you mention, it's static. Since the information is already in the Directory, and is dynamic, it would be nice to be able to pull a distribution and it would be current.

This capability is already available:
  1. Go to the Directory on LDS.org
  2. Click on "Ward Leaders" in the left-hand menu
  3. Click on "Family History" in the middle panel
  4. Click on "Email Family History Leaders" in the right-hand panel
  5. That will bring up your email program's "compose message" dialog with the "To:" list populated with all the email addresses for FH leaders
  6. You can copy those addresses into a group, perhaps filtering out some addresses you don't want.
  7. You can also repeat this process for all the wards in the stake if you want a list of all FH consultants in the stake
Admittedly, this process can be a bit tedious, but the information is available.
