streaming devices for meetinghouses

#1

Post by jworth1 »

I read where the WD tv streaming device was perferred over the Roku XS for use in the meethinghouses because the latter requires signing up for an account with a credit card.

Can you add channels to the WD device like you can with the Roku so as to get Mormon Messages and the BYUtv channels?

Thanks

The WD wasn't recommended as a "streaming device" but rather as a means to use a USB drive and play content. Except in the case of conferences, use of streaming is discouraged and it's likely to suffer problems.

You also can not stream conference or add the Mormon channel when using a WD device.

So, you can't add channels to the WD but you can with the Roku...

Channels = streaming, and that's being discouraged at this point (except for conferences when the Internet bandwidth can be dedicated to streaming.)

You do not need a credit card to sign up for Roku - call them up and they can waive the requirement.

Our FMG sent a message to all Stake Presidents that he supports indicating that the Roku was not approved and that the Church supports the Western Digital devices.

The email subject was titled RE:Internet Upgrades --> Which leads me to believe this FM was responding to a desire from a Stake President to upgrade their Internet Speeds to support the Roku's need to Stream Videos from the Internet.

Whenever you think of the Roku and the Mormon Channel, and the BYUTV apps, remember, it is connecting to the Internet and Streaming the video down from the Internet.

The Roku XS does support the flash drive option just like the Western Digital and is priced the same. The concern about potential inappropriate advertising is real, though the odds of inappropriate items coming up are minimal, and if you immediately change to the correct app the advertisements are no longer an issue.
