I personally would find it more friendly if external links automatically opened a new browser (or a new tab as set by the user). I found that this is a function of skins as described at:

External link opens new browser window
This morning I could not find this task on the scrum board and asked Kip Enger, the project manager about it and he remembers the issue being raised. I wrote it on a sticky note and put it in the "To be prioritized" section.
