Temple Ordinances

Postby muscidamyst » Sun Aug 26, 2018 5:13 am

I have been doing my Family History and found that some of the Temple Ordinances which were done by late mother did in 1973, are been requested to be done again?
I am not sure why this is, and what I should do?

The first thing is to search for duplicate people. The ordinances may be attached to that record. Once you combine the records, the ordinances will be complete and the request canceled.

If you can't find any duplicates, then I'd suggest attachi9ng source records. You may bump into the duplicate that way.

Agreed. I figure I can do more temple work by merging duplicate records in a day than if folks sit in temple sessions all month.

Thank you for your replies :)
There are no duplicates to merge has I have done this many times with other members of my family.
I have also found that work my late mother recorded as been done on the old PAF are being done by other people who have linked to my family tree. I am not sure how they can request to do the work when it has already been done.....does that all make sense :) only by brain is getting very confused with it all. :)

If it is a case of a recently deceased member, who received their ordinances while living, the ordinance work is attached to the church record, & will appear in the system when the clerk enters the death. If you are worried about duplication, simply reserve the name to prevent it from being done. When the completed ordinances attach, the reservation will disappear.

Unless the ordinance was lost somewhere, it should still be out there as a duplicate record. You may need to do some searches to find it. Otherwise you'll have to contact FH support through the website help function.

If the work has been recorded as complete on familyTree, the system should not allow them to request the work to be done again. It sounds to me like you have a personal genealogy program (PAF or otherwise) that indicates the work has been done. However, if the work doesn't show as being done on FamilyTree, the system will allow other relatives to reserve the names.

If you KNOW the work has been done but it doesn't show on your ancestor's record on FamilyTree, there is a high likelihood that there is a duplicate record somewhere but the system may not recognize it automatically due to subtle differences in the two records. I have occasionally found some that were duplicates but did not show up on the find a duplicate option so I had to compare them using the two record numbers (on the find a duplicate tool, you can add the record number of a potential duplicate, once you have it, if nothing pops up automatically).

If the people have common names, the names may have been merged with another person of the same name in the past, then split out again later or recreated. Sometimes the ordinances are left with the other person and are incorrect. I have submitted requests in the past to FamilySearch, asking them to restore the earlier ordinances, especially if I have proof - like an old family group sheet from the archives section of the Family Group Record Collection which is now online. or the original ordinance card on which I had done the work myself - I have seen instances where my old Pennsylvania Quaker ancestors who used mostly "Bible" names have been incorrectly merged and sometimes ended up with 6 or more wives, all but one of which belonged with various other people of the same name. I heard in a talk given by a FamilySearch employee who said that early on, FamilySearch was using an algorithm which was incorrectly combining people and messed up the system. This has been a nightmare for me to correct.

Marianjohnson, thank you for your explanation, I think this possibly what is happening. I have been having a lot of this happening, as I have members of my family that have the name John, e.g. John Quinn, John Henshaw, etc, it even gets confusing for me which one I am following as their fathers all have the same name too. :) I went on a couple of my families records and there were three wives all marrying the same person almost on the same year.....very confusing. :) I think I have a lot of researching t do. :)
