The French records are not online. Does anyone know what the status is for getting those records digitized?

There certainly are many records from France online, but perhaps not in the area or time you are interested in.

If you go to the FamilySearch Wiki article on French Genealogy, you can see many resources, both in FamilySearch.org and elsewhere, for doing research on France.

And if you want to lend a hand, there are 2 indexing batches available to index using Web Indexing:
- "France, Saône-et-Loire—1896 Census" is 21% indexed
- "France, Vienne—World War I Registers, 1867–1921 [Part A]" is 5% indexed

These two sets of records have all been scanned and are just waiting for volunteers to index and arbitrate them so they can be searchable online.

By the way, you also find french records at the "Geneanet" partner website you can sign into for free if you connect it with your familysearch account...

People researching English records are blessed to have many records available – more than 90% of records indexed are in English. People who speak French and other languages are needed to help index records in other languages, so they can be made available on FamilySearch for research. Indexing is a volunteer work and will only move as fast as there are volunteers willing to help – see this article from a couple years ago (the exact numbers may be different today, but the wide gap between English and other languages still exists):
